If you are online trying to generate business and make sales you need to know who you are selling to. Even though you maybe an enterprise with you as the CEO and your cat as the wellness coordinator you need to run your business as a real business that has the potential to pull in significant yearly revenue. To that end the first thing you need to do, before you even consider deciding to get online to grow you enterprise, is to figure out who it is you're trying to sell to because like the quote says…
I can almost read your mind and you probably think “but Gary what does that even mean…if I target as many people as possible for my business opportunity then surely that will give me the greatest chances of success”. I hear ya, on a conceptual level this makes perfect sense. However, if you don't hone in and get super laser beam focused on who it is that you are targeting then your social media marketing message will not have the impact it rightly deserves and the way to do that is to create a customer avatar.
What is a Customer Avatar
Simple put a customer avatar is the ideal person you would want to speak to about whatever it is you are offering. If you are an affiliate of a company that sells organic cat food then you ideal customer is not likely to be people that own dogs. If you are in a health and wellness company that sells products that have health benefits for everyone then you may likely say “but my product line will give results to everyone that has a pulse…” true however marketing a 18 to 35-year-old will be a totally different messaging to marketing to 49 to 65-year-old.
To create a customer avatar you need to determine what characteristics your ideal customer will possess such as income level, career, goals even eye color and ethnicity. Also giving them a name will make the avatar all the more concrete when it comes time to post you social media updates ensuring that you increase you likelihood of connecting with the ideal customer, business partner or client looking for what you're offering. The point of this exercise is to be able to clearly see exactly who you are marketing to when you think about your customer, you products and what problems you want to solve for your customer.
Below I have included a customer avatar worksheet to help you define who your perfect customer is and what their characteristics are. In a follow-up post I will show you how to use your avatar when you create your social media marketing.
